In “No More Hiding!”a Philippines international awareness and anti-tattoo discrimination campaign launched in 2014 during the President Aquino III Administration, showcasing Recto family political dynasty granddaughter, action star, celebrity trainer and Cover Girl Michaella Recto emblazzin’ with a sexy half body tattoo by Pinoy Tattoo Master Julius “Boom” Belo, later showcasing Cover Girls Rachel Lobangco and Gwen Garci in an in-your-face, eye-opening, unapologetic effort to demolish discrimination against Filipino tattoo artists; the guardians of a 500-year Filipino heritage, and their tattoo loving clients.
Now in full-force during the new President Duterte Administration in which many ‘tattooed’ and/or ‘Masa’ people and professionals supported with their votes, the tattooed and pierced Duterte Family does not discriminate against tattoos –as they have tattoos and piercing of their own (a younger President Duterte pictured above top right being tattooed).
In addition, their Duterte Family home in the Visayas Region of the Philippines is known for its traditional and historical tattoo heritage.
In a first of its kind series of informal meetings with members of the US and PH tattoo communities, and officials from Republic Insurance; a part of The
Manny V. Pangilinan Group of Companies, Malacanang Palace PBS and KA&CO America; the US Executive Publishers of The Philippines Magazine International and Philippines INK, talks where had on how to develop a professionals tattoo network registration throughout the Philippine Islands, which would unify all artist into one internationally recognized professional industry network.
“In the Philippines, it’s a fact: discrimination has negatively-affected the livelihood of millions of artists and tattoo lovers…I have seen with my own eyes, Filipinos from Metro Manila to Mindanao Province, who have faced harsh criticisms, unemployment, out-right rejection, all leading to often times a less affluent and stable lifestyle –despite their true inner talents.True-Artists such as our PH INK Master Finalist Jhay Dellima are victims of this…Jhay once an Icon and Idol in the industry was whipped out after a diving accident left him disabled –he had no professional insurance. This is a quiet and unseen discrimination as they [the artists] are not afforded basic professional incentives given to lesser professional fields. We along with our friends at Republic Insurance, celebrities and in politics, intend to change all of that.”
–Kareem Jackson, US Executive Publisher, KA&CO America LLC
One of the most inherent symbols of professionalism in the Philippines is the Professional Secondary and Industry Member Official Identification Card. Professionals within the Customer Service, Medical, Nurses, IT/Computer Science, Food & Beverage, Commercial Drivers, Barbers, Stylists/Beauticians and even Massage Therapists all enjoy the benefits of being both recognized and respected nationwide AND globally as professionals in their fields. Unlike Filipino artists, these professionals can even apply as OFW’s and work abroad.
Tattoo artists –just as any professional vocation- often spend years educating themselves, then, as apprentices, getting health screenings, proving themselves in competitions, maintaining their organizational memberships and networking as true-entrepreneurs; to ultimately invest in their craft and develop their livelihood businesses –no different than any other ‘vocational’ professional.
Along with the inherent benefits of professional endorsements and affiliation from national and international professional organizations: such as, certification, on-line verification, promotion, as well as,accident, dismemberment and life insurance for their families, professionals benefit from the esteem of being recognized as a ‘group’ or organization, a professional or master in their field(s).
